Stûv and the Ecodesign 2022 standard | pt

Designing wood- and pellet-burning appliances that provide an answer to issues relating to energy and the environment has been a key priority in Stûv’s approach since it designed its first appliance in the 1980s.

Stûv’s burners are more efficient than the requirements stipulated by the Ecodesign standard for 2022. But what exactly does this standard mean?

The “Ecodesign 2022” standard requires manufacturers in the EEA (European Economic Area) to comply with environmental ecodesign criteria, which, among other things, are designed to reduce the emission of fine particles into the atmosphere. This standard is applicable to products marketed as of 1 January 2022. However, it will have no impact on devices that are already installed.

This European regulation was introduced in 2015 and prevents the sale and installation of heating appliances whose energy efficiency is too low, including in particular, gas or oil boilers with an efficiency rating below B.

The Ecodesign standard therefore supports the concept of ecodesign, which combines energy efficiency and respect for the environment when it comes to producing energy-related products such as heating solutions.

It is defined on the basis of a number of criteria:

  • The energy efficiency of the product,
  • Its technical power,
  • The type of fuel used,
  • The emission levels of pollutants under normal operating conditions,
  • The required safety distances depending on the fuel used.

An energy label can be seen on every product so that consumers can easily compare different appliances. This labelling system was introduced in 2018 for individual wood heating solutions. From January 2022, these solutions will have to fulfil specific performance levels in terms of energy and the environment.

Products that meet the requirements of the Ecodesign 2022 standard guarantee a higher level of safety, offer energy/financial savings (because they are more efficient) and have a smaller environmental footprint (as they are cleaner heating solutions). Without this Ecodesign label, which complements the CE standard, individual wood- and pellet-burning heating systems can no longer be sold in Europe.
