Astronef house, 2008

Astronef house, 2008

On a quiet no-through road in Jambes, where the Meuse flows gently and the citadel rises up on the distant horizon, there is a cedar-clad house, a shining example of modernity and ecology. It’s called Astronef, and it offers those who live there a haven of comfort, with large bay windows that open up to the outside world, and a Stûv stove that keeps the inside warm. Tangible proof that aesthetics and ecology can live side by side.

Revealing the beauty of simplicity

Heralded for its visionary, environmentally-friendly design, the Astronef house exists thanks to a team of incredibly clever architects, Crahay & Jamaigne based in Malmedy, who pulled out all the stops to reveal the beauty and efficiency of simplicity, with real creative flair.

The house is made up of two elegant spaces - home and work - offering both comfort and style. Two off-set blocks maintain the privacy of a patio that opens up from the living space. Made-to-measure built-in furniture and minimalist, efficient lighting have been meticulously picked out to finish off the interior look. The rich lighting and warm atmosphere are particularly striking in the living room which, thanks to the Stûv 21 wood-burner, combines elegance and performance brilliantly.

Wood is everywhere you look in the construction of this house, from the post-and-beam structure to the cladding. Wood is such a huge source of inspiration for the concept - Astronef is naturally made of it - that there absolutely had to be a wood-burner here.

This open house is air-conditioned thanks to a mechanical double-flow ventilation system using Canadian wells, and the underfloor heating is powered by a heat pump. The addition of a Stûv 21 stove fits in perfectly. The sophisticated, minimalist design, as well as how it works, instantly give the room a feeling of warmth and well-being. The initial heating system gives it a real boost. Perfect for freezing cold days!

Light, laser-sharp precision: so simple, yet so effective. With its gentle, comforting flames, the Stûv 21 lights up the space. Last but by no means least, the two designers who live in this house chose the Stûv for the pleasure that it gives. They wanted to get the same feeling as their parents and grandparents who loved the crackling flames so much. Once lit, the flames take you back in time. With the Stûv 21, they can rediscover the charm of a traditional open fire, with the added advantage of ecology and performance.

A greener than green challenge

A greener than green challenge

This house, with its impressive proportions, presented one particularly critical issue: the slope on which it had been built. Quite a challenge for the landscape architect, Benoît Saint Amand, who was tasked with planning the outside space. The goal was to create a flat garden on a plot that was originally on a slope. Together with the owners, it was planted completely from scratch. The result is quite remarkable. A horseshoe path in front of the house adds a touch of magic…
